Christopher W. S. Ross new UN special rep for W. Sahara

A new special representative of the UN secretary-general has been appointed to follow Peter van Walsum. Not Warren Christopher, but Christopher W. S. Ross, a former ambassador to Algeria 1988-1991, i.e. the period of the cease-fire agreement and the Moroccan-Algerian thaw.

Sounds like a highly qualified guy, who, according to his bio, is an Arabic speaker with loads of Maghreb experience -- but it remains a mystery what the otherwise very appropriate initials W. S. stand for.

As a terrorism expert he could come in handy for Al-Qaeda seems to get involved some way or another.

I wouldn't take such terrorist stories to seriously when the source is "Rabat security sources".

These are the same guys who claim that Polisario is a terrorist organisation...

Regarding Christopher W. S. Ross, I do wonder if this appointment is not just a way of the Bush administration to maintain the current government's policy although a shift in administration may be coming soon.

Adnkronos is the only source I can find for this Al-Qaeda-thing. But I think it is remarkable because such an attack would be in line with the attack on UN offices in Algiers.
